The Domino Effect – How Dominoes Can Change Your Perspective
Domino is a unified platform that orchestrates the end-to-end data science lifecycle across hybrid multicloud infrastructure. It accelerates time to value from AI and makes it easier for teams to manage compliance, security and cost.
When you think of domino, you probably picture the small plastic tiles that people can stack on end in long lines. When one of the dominoes is tipped over, it will cause the next domino in line to tip and so on, creating very complex designs. This simple game is often used to teach children about the concept of a chain reaction, which is also known as the Domino Effect. The Domino Effect states that if you change one behavior, it will cause a shift in related behaviors. For example, if you start making your bed each day, you may find that you begin to clean more frequently and organize your home. This is because a change to one behavior will usually trigger a chain reaction that causes you to adopt new habits as a natural side effect of your new behavior.
Lily Hevesh first started playing with dominoes when she was 9. She liked to set them up in straight or curved lines and then flick the first domino over, watching the whole line fall. Now, Hevesh is a professional domino artist, and she creates incredible setups for movies, TV shows, and events. She has even created a world record by setting up an arrangement with more than 300,000 dominoes. Hevesh says she finds inspiration in nature and the human body. She has found that a domino can have an almost mystical quality. A domino has the power to change your perspective. She describes the process of working on a domino chain as a lot like firing a neuron in your brain. When you push on one domino, the energy of the dominoes is transferred into a pulse that travels down the line and knocks over the rest of the dominoes, just like a nerve impulse in your body.
Hevesh believes that domino chains can be used as a metaphor for personal growth. She says that good dominoes are difficult and challenging, but when you focus on them, they can propel other parts of your life forward in an exciting way. For example, if you are trying to get your finances in order, you might consider tackling the process of creating a financial plan as your “domino.” Once you complete this task, you will have the energy to tackle other challenges that will help you reach your goals.
The word “domino” comes from the Latin term for a crown, which refers to the distinctive shape of the domino pieces. Earlier, the word had a sense of garment, possibly a long hooded cloak worn together with a mask at carnival season or at a masquerade. Many sets of dominoes are made from natural materials, such as silver lip ocean pearl oyster shell (mother of pearl), ivory, and dark hardwoods such as ebony. The pips on these dominoes are inlaid or painted black or white.
